Factors to Consider When Adding Someone to Your Auto Policy

It’s fairly easy to add another driver to your auto policy. Simply call your carrier and discuss what information they require to make the change. The move is almost immediate and by the next billing cycle, your premiums will reflect the changes.
However, you need to think about this addition and how it will affect your rates. Consider the following points.
Age and Driving Record
Particularly, an individual with a few tickets on his or her record could easily drive up your premiums and, insurers automatically consider drivers under 25 a higher risk. However, if that individual will be using the vehicle infrequently, your insurer may factor this in and not increase your premiums as sharply.
Number of Drivers
Often times, only a certain number of people can sign up and your carrier only covers up to a set number of vehicles. On average, these tend to be four people for a maximum of four cars.
Who Can Be Added?
In addition to a spouse or child, your policy may further be open to the following people:

  • Roommates, if you share the same vehicles.
  • Family members who do not live in your household.
  • Friends who drive your car, even if only on occasion.

In some cases, if the friend, roommate or family member sharing your vehicle already has coverage, you don’t necessarily have to add them. However, if they own or share the title for one of the vehicles listed on the policy or will be driving the car without you in it, including them is necessary.
Who Shouldn’t You Add?
While you can add multiple names to your policy, it’s generally a good idea to leave any employees or coworkers off. Although you might think you’re helping out by giving them use of your vehicle, personal coverage is not adequate in this situation. Rather, if you’re an employer and your car’s being used by your employees for work purposes, upgrading to a commercial auto policy gives you better protection in the long run.
