Christmas Tree Safety

Christmas is finally upon us, and as we all know, it is a tradition to put up a Christmas tree. When people think of Christmas trees, I’m sure safety isn’t at the top of their list for what they associate with it. Overlooking your Christmas tree’s safety can be dangerous, especially if you have small children or pets. Making the effort to check your tree when putting it up will ensure that you and your family have a safer Christmas.
Did you know that Christmas trees are considered a fire hazard? Most people don’t think about this when putting up their trees. It is a fact that fires are more common with real trees compared to fake ones, and rightfully so. If you use a real tree, it is very important to inspect it when you pick it out. Some tips for preventing fires include picking out a fresh tree. This is very important because older trees dry out, and it is easier for them to catch fire compared to fresher trees. Along with picking a fresher tree, it is smart to make sure the tree has water to prevent it from drying.
Along with making sure your tree is fresh when you pick it out, where you place it in your home is very important as well. For both real and fake trees you need to be aware of the placement of your tree. Having your tree too close to heat sources such as fireplaces, vents, and even candles is not recommended, and could possibly cause it to catch on fire.
Children and pets need to be taken into consideration when it comes to your tree as well. If you have small children or pets who tend to mess with things, it might be a good idea to block off the area where the tree is when you are not there to watch. Also, you need to be aware of the ornaments that you hang on your tree to avoid any choking hazards if they are small or the possibility of your child or pet getting cut if they are made of a breakable material such as glass.
Did you know people could be allergic to Christmas trees? If you’ve never had a real tree in your home before and decide to get one this year and don’t feel right after getting it, that might be the reason. Many people are allergic to the microscopic mold spores that the tree carries and that can bring on symptoms such as sneezing, watery eyes, and an itchy nose. If you suddenly feel any of these symptoms coming on after getting your tree, now you might know why.
Putting up and decorating a Christmas tree can be a very fun family activity during the holidays as long as you are conscious of how to do so safely. You need to take more precautions for a real tree because they are more flammable than fake ones.   If you plan on getting a real tree, try to pick one that is as fresh as possible, and make sure to keep it watered to prevent it from drying. Hundreds of house fires are caused by Christmas trees every year, so be aware of where you put your tree and make sure you and your family remain safe this holiday season.
